NATIONAL YOUTH CIRCUIT RACE ROUND 15 Youth riders from Spalding Cycling Club took part in round one of the National Youth Road Circuit Race series on Saturday. VC Lincoln put on a fantastic event with around 200 riders taking part during the day.
The first Spalding rider to race was Matthew Ellis aged 8, who lined up for the 7 mile Under 10’s race. Matt had a poor start and missed the break away group of 5 riders which left him isolated, however Matt continued to try hard to catch the leaders, but the pace was to much and he never made contact with them. Matt finished in 9th place.
Reece Moradkhan was the next Spalding rider off in the Under 12’s. Reece had a 15mile race which went off very fast. Again Reece missed the early break but continued to do battle with a small group of chasing riders to finish in 15th place.
Two riders Oliver Fensom and Harry Bellars took to the start for the Under 14’s race over 20miles. Both Harry and Oliver were overwhelmed by the blistering pace at the start of the race and struggled to stay in contention with the leaders. Both riders dropped off the lead group. Oliver then put his time trial skills into play to power around finishing in 19th. Harry worked with a chasing group of four riders to Finish in 25th place.
The biggest race of the day was the Under 16. With a large field of 72 riders entered and some continental riders in the field, it was always going to be a frantic race. The pace from the gun was unbelievable with attacks going off from the start which split the field into 2 groups within 1 lap. Alex Avery was the only Spalding rider in the race and he managed to stay with the leaders for 12 laps until he was forced wide on a corner onto the grass and dropped out the back of the field. With the blistering pace being set it was impossible for him to catch the leaders. Alex finished in 38th place.
This was the first National event for all the Spalding CC riders and a massive learning curve for them. Considering the lack of experience they all did exceptionally well.
